CARDIOLOGISTS INVADE THE TENDERLOIN!

March 2013 is gearing up to be a healthy month of ministry at SFCI Health and Wellness Center! On Friday March 8, 2013 The American College of Cardiologists held their 2013 Conference here in San Francisco and City Impact was there. Hundreds of cardiologists from around the nation were on hand for the conference held right around the corner from City Impact at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel. In conjunction with this major event, City Impact was invited to headline the “Spirit of the Heart” Breakfast and facilitate the Health Fair associated with the conference!

At the breakfast sponsored by the Association of Black Cardiologists, dedicated City Impact medical volunteers, Drs Jerry Hom and Mary Lou De Natale along with City Impact’s Executive Director Christian Huang shared their hearts about the role of faith and spirituality in lowering blood pressure and reducing the propensity to self-destructive life styles. In framing our work and preventive medicine in the Tenderloin, Christian Huang noted that, “before prevention, what our residents need is intervention!”  A statement that sums up the reason for our existence.

At the subsequent Health Fair at City Impact’s Health and Wellness Center approximately 200 Tenderloin residents received a Heart Health Risk Assessment that included FREE blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index and cholesterol level tests!

Our own volunteer cardiologist Dr Jimmy Jang and City Impact nurses helped interpret test results and sign prospective patient candidates for our upcoming “Total Wellness” Program.   Additionally, both the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) educated Tenderloin residents on healthy living and the President of the ABC, Dr. Ola Akinboboye delivered an impassioned message and stressed the importance of faith in their physical health.  What an amazing full day where Jesus was glorified!
