Rescue Mission

Rex's Story | Addiction in the Tenderloin (inner city of San Francisco)

Gearing up for the Holidays we can find ourselves overwhelmed by our schedules. In the inner city of San Francisco, someone like Rex is just hanging on by a thread. After years of addiction he now faced the operation table. At the hospital before right before his surgery, there was only one thing to do—pray. Rex realized when we open our eyes to God’s love, we can discover his heart is to be with us.

It takes time, energy and resources to intervene in someone’s life. In the inner city we want to empower others and see them set free. Like Rex, sometimes it takes years of consistency and a miracle. Rex was in and out of City Impact for decades, but until his encounter with God he claims, “I was a terror to City Impact!”

Now Rex volunteers every day and helps with security, bible studies, services and church gatherings throughout the week!

Bobby's Story

When you face an obstacle or hurdle that stands in the way of your destiny, you can either see them as an excuse, or a tool to learn and rise above. Bobby is someone who is well familiar with both. Bobby became addicted to meth in his 20's, later began hearing voices after using speed amphetamine, contracted HIV after using a needle that was tampered with, and was diagnosed with ataxia, a crippling disease.

Bobby has lived with limitations and the excuses became so common to him:

"...But I hear the voices...."

"...I just don't want to be a burden to anyone...."

It was when Bobby stopped at the Rescue Mission he first heard the gospel. I thought it was "cool" as many other attributes of a God that would chase after him.

Bobby's wonder of who God is has grown tremendously after being a vital member within a community that loves him and surrounds him with support.

What formerly shrouded Bobby's mind with doubt, accusations and fear has now turned into laughter, joy and a wonder of God.

No longer can you hear a resounding series of excuses but laughs and an exclaiming, "praise Jesus!"

Thank you to all the volunteers, supporters and donors that drive this ministry and intervene on behalf of someone like Bobby!

"Jesus, was in my heart as well, and he knows my heart. That's why I am slowly but surely figuring out my destiny in life." says Bobby. "I'm more clear minded now, I'm not out of control, I'm not making a mess anymore, and I appreciate that, the LORD's gift, he's given me."

Bobby is one of the many that have been served through Adopt a Building and our Rescue Mission

18 Ways to Volunteer in 2018

San Francisco City Impact exists to intervene on behalf of the people in the inner city of San Francisco. For 34 years we have served the homeless, and at-risk children in the Tenderloin (inner city of SF). We mobilize over 10,000 volunteers a year through to intervene on behalf of others.

Here are 18 different ways you can get involved with City Impact and make a difference this year.

1. SPONSOR A CHILD

You can empower, encourage and equip a child with education by sponsoring for $38/month. In a crowded and impoverished area like the Tenderloin, there are also 3,000 children. A child without support while experiencing trauma at an early age leads to addiction and isolation with every behavioral and learning disability symptom along the way. Your monthly $38 sponsorship provides more than a financial gift and supplies, YOU ARE THE GIFT to your child through letter correspondence, visitation, and prayer. You can show a child a brighter world than the darkness around them.

2. MENTOR A CHILD

You can meet with a K-8 student on a regular basis to come alongside their goals, and be a powerful influence to inspire and encourage them. Through our mentorship program, many students have been inspired to apply to schools of their choice or pursue a dream. Mentors have great joys to invest deeply in their child.

3. AIDE A CLASS

You can be an aide in a classroom to help provide stability for a K-8 class. Assist a teacher by visiting M-F, 8 AM to 3 PM on a regular basis to work with students and solve problems creatively. Responsibilities may include organizing books, reading with students, facilitating reading quizzes, organizing scores and reports, and managing a child’s behavior.

You can help cook lunch for over 100 K-8 students or 300 homeless.  Our commercial kitchen cooks over 150,000 meals for people in the community. Food is the language spoken to many people in the community and the heartbeat and driving force to many of our ministries and outreaches.

Adopt a Building is a long term volunteer opportunity to deliver meals and build relationships with people who are shut-in. This is a very relational and intentional ministry to people who may have no one else to care or look for them. You can help someone off the streets to get them housed. Impact someone by assisting in our Social Services department and coming alongside them every step of the way. Sometimes it’s not a matter of availability but of encouragement and walking through each process.

Mr. Yancey's Story | Musician, Martial Artist & Multilinguist

What type of life would you have if you could speak 30 languages, be musically gifted to play and sing any song, and be a physical warrior to master martial arts and to standing military press over 275 pounds?

You'd probably imagine some of these skills could lead to meeting some of the world's most famous people—Arnoarnold Schwarzenegger, Joe Montana, and Santana.

It sounds like a talent dream, but you think that with these skills you could ever be lead to homelessness & eviction?

This is exactly what happened to the talented, globetrotter, Norbert Yancey. He was facing eviction, about to become homeless on the streets of San Francisco, and had no one to help him. After having met so many people, he was left hungry and all alone...watch the video below to see his story.

Felicia's Story – You Can Make an Impact

Felicia believed she wouldn't live past her young age through a chronic history of abuse, victimization, and injustice. By a miracle she was able to get out, but with the help someone who intervened. Someone who visited her, someone who invited her in, someone who cared for her, someone who brought her home.

City Impact is an idea that one man or woman can make a difference. Through City Impact's multiple departments, a holistic approach is taken to revitalize a community and change a life.

Check out the video below and see the impact on one woman.
